C1 Receptive Skills Course The course is 50 hours in total and is delivered in person. All the grammar and vocabulary of the C1 syllabus is taught. Conversation exercises in pairs are also provided to practice and consolidate the subject. Students will practice the various types of exercises present in the exam: cloze, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, word formation and grammatical multiple choice both in class and at home. Grammar: “have” lexical and grammatical uses, discourse markers – linkers, the past: habitual events at specific incidents, pronouns – generic, reflexive, reciprocal, it/there, “get”, discourse markers – adverbs and adverbial expressions, adding emphasis – inversion, speculation and deduction, distancing, unreal uses of past tenses, verb + object + infinitive/gerund, conditional sentences, permission, obligation and necessity, perception and sensation, advanced gerunds and infinitives, expressing future plans and arrangements, ellipsis, nouns: compound and possessive forms, relative clauses, adding emphasis – cleft sentences. The lexicon: personality, work, word building – abstract nouns, phrases with “get”, conflict and warfare, describing books and films, sounds and the human voice, expressions with time, money, compound adjectives, phones and technology, adjectives and prepositions, word formation – prefixes, art, color idioms, health and medicine, similies, travel and tourism, animal matters, preparing food, word building – adjectives, nouns and verbs, words that are often confused. Students will do reading exercises - comprehension: understanding the meaning of the lexicon from context - and listening.

Modalit� d'esame

COMPUTERIZED TEST (55 minutes): 1) Cloze Test: a short text (about 200 words) with 15 spaces, where one word has been removed. You have to read the text and fill in the spaces, choosing between 4 options from a drop-down menu. The missing words are usually part of lexical collocations. 2) Grammar Exercise: 10 questions that test different grammatical structures. Each question has 4 sentences. In some cases you have to decide which sentence is correct and in others which is incorrect. 3) Word Formation: a short text (about 150-200 words) with 10 spaces, where one word has been removed, and a root word in brackets. You have to read the text and fill in the spaces, forming the missing word from the root words. 4) Reading Exercise: a text of about 400 words, sometimes divided into sections, followed by 10 questions, each with 4 options. You have to read the text and answer the questions: some are comprehension questions and others are vocabulary questions in the context of the text. 5) Listening exercises: an audio piece divided into 2 parts. The first part (about 1 minute) has 2 comprehension questions, each with 3 options. The second part (about 3 minutes) has 6 comprehension questions, again with 3 options.
