The skills of academic writing Set book for study: The Plot Against America by Philip Roth The skills necessary for giving successful presentations Selected authentic English articles and essays for reading comprehension Listening practice using both authentic audio and video material Conversation/Discussion based on topics generated by reading and listening material Lexical development, particularly of academic language, everyday idioms and demotic language (slang) Appropriacy of usage of lexis

Modalit� d'esame

First semester: Assignment (800 words) for completion at home with deadline in early December. Students write an academic essay in response to a task set by the teacher. Alternatively, students can write on their own topic, provided it is approved by the teacher beforehand. Second semester: Timed written exam consisting of academic writing (600 words) to be produced in response to a task given in the exam paper. Speaking exam: Students present a paper (5 minutes presentaion) using presentation aids of their choice (e.g. PowerPoint). Students are examined in small groups, and must also respond with questions and comments to the presentations of the other students in their group, for which they receive credit.
