Programma
We will work from the text book, other material and past exam papers. We will look at each of the different genres of writing and analyse the type of language used in each. The students will learn how to compose a formal letter, including the layout, salutations, set expressions and other useful functional language. They will learn how to plan and write an essay, a review, an article, a report, a narrative or descriptive piece of writing, varying the style for each of the different genre and learning useful language for each. Remedial work will be done on grammar as and when necessary and lexis will continue to be taught, in particular collocations, idiomatic expressions. The students will also have the option of reading a set book, which we will discuss in class, and they can practise writing answers to questions about it. We will do speaking practice in pairs, focusing on interactive language and using pronunciation to convey and enhance meaning. Exam practice will be done in class and for homework
Modalit� d'esame
WRITTEN EXAM (2 hours) The written exam will have two parts: The first part will be a text of 150-180 parole which is obligatory for all students. This question consists of a formal letter (application, complaint, request etc). In this part the student should be able to respect the format and register of a formal letter, achieving the communicative aims effectively. In the second part (composition of 250-280 words) the student has to choose one of the 5 questions in the exam. Among these there will also be questions on set books (essays or novels) which the students must have read in advance. The titles are communicated at the beginning of the academic year. The student should demonstrate the ability to write clear and well-organised texts, logically developing their viewpoint. They should be able to write an essay or a report expressing complex ideas, highlighting points which they consider to be significant and choosing the style and register which is suitable for the genre of writing (argumentative, review, report, descriptive etc). The use of monolingual or bilingual dictionaries is not permitted. ORAL EXAM To be done in pairs (decided at the time of the exam): The exam consists of a conversation lasting 15 minutes in which the student should be able to present, both to the examiner and to the other student, clear and articulate descriptions of complex subjects, integrating secondary themes, developing specific points and concluding in an appropriate way. They will be evaluated on C1 level lexical and morphosyntactic content, pronunciation and prosody, fluency and interactive communication, participation in the discussion and exchange of opinions.
