Programma

The following writing types will be taught: Graph/chart/table descriptions Formal emails/letters: job applications and complaints Argumentative essays Articles Reviews Proposals Reports Descriptive essays Stories and narratives In addition, there is a set book to study: "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Speaking activities are programmed throughout, and towards the end of the course focus will be on the structure and the speaking exam and the specific skills needed for it.

Modalit� d'esame

Time: 90 minutes The C1 written exam consists of two parts. Part 1 Candidates are given information in the form of either 1) a graph or other representation of statistical data or 2) an email or other communication from an outside source (for example a booking confirmation/job advertisement/invitation to an event) and some instructions outlining the task. Candidates must produce an extended piece of writing (150-180 words) in an appropriate register. In the case of a graph/data, they are expected to interpret and describe some or all of the information, while in the case of an email/communication a response in the form of a formal letter or email) is required. Part 2 Candidates choose one of several task options for which they have to write an extended piece of writing (250 words), in an appropriate register, according to the instructions in the task. The different possible types of writing are: articles, reviews, argumentative essays, descriptions, narratives, reports and proposals. There are five options to choose from, and in addition to these there is one question for each of the set books of the C1 courses in that semester. (Each course has a different set book: for this course it is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.) Candidates are free to choose any of the set book questions, not necessarily the one of the course they attended. N.B. The option to describe a graph will not be a part of the exam from the May 2022 session. Part 1 of the exam will be solely an email/letter. Everything else remains the same.
