Programma
We will cover all the grammatical structures in the C1 syllabus: “have” lexical and grammatical uses, discourse markers – linkers, the past: habitual events ad specific incidents, pronouns – generic, reflexive, reciprocal, it/there, “get”, discourse markers – adverbs and adverbial expressions, adding emphasis – inversion, speculation and deduction, distancing, unreal uses of past tenses, verb + object + infinitive/gerund, conditional sentences, permission, obligation and necessity, perception and sensation, advanced gerunds and infinitives, expressing future plans and arrangements, ellipsis, nouns: compound and possessive forms, relative clauses, adding emphasis – cleft sentences. We will cover the following lexical areas: personality, work, word building – abstract nouns, phrases with “get”, conflict and warfare, describing books and films, sounds and the human voice, expressions with time, money, compound adjectives, phones and technology, adjectives and prepositions, word formation – prefixes, art, colour idioms, health and medicine, similes, travel and tourism, animal matters, preparing food, word building – adjectives, nouns and verbs, words that are often confused. The students will regularly practise the skills of reading – for comprehension and lexis in context - and listening comprehension. We will also do speaking in pairs in order to practise the grammar and lexis taught. The students will do specific practice of the types of exercises in the exam: cloze test, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, word formation and grammatical multiple choice both in class and for homework.
Modalit� d'esame
COMPUTER TEST (55 minutes) 1) Cloze Test: this consists of a short text (about 200 words) with 15 gaps, where a word or words have been taken out. You have to complete these gaps, choosing from a drop-down menu of 4 options. The missing words are usually part of lexical collocations. 2) Grammar: this consists of 10 questions which test different grammatical areas. Each question has 4 sentences. In some cases you have to decide which of the 4 is correct and in others which of the 4 is incorrect. 3) Word Formation : this consists of a short text (about 150-200 words) with 10 gaps, where a word has been taken out, and a root word in brackets. You have to complete these gaps, forming the missing word from the word given. 4) Reading Comprehension: this consists of a text of about 400 words, sometimes divided into sections, and 10 questions with 4 options each. You have to read the text and answer the questions, some of which test comprehension and others lexis in context. 5) Listening Comprehension: this consists of an audio recording which is in 2 parts. The first part is approximately one minute and is followed by 2 comprehension questions, each with 3 options to choose from. The second part is approximately 3 minutes and is followed by 6 comprehension questions, again with 3 options.
